Gale River Road/Mt. Garfield question

Postby Dirk » Tue Jan 22, 2019 11:37 am

Question for you White Mountain folks - We are contemplating a Mt. Garfield tour in the near future. I am guessing that any winter parking lot the USFS might or might not maintain off of Rt. 3 is going unplowed during the shutdown. Does anyone have any thoughts on parking anywhere nearby?

I don't actually know if the forest service plows their lots or gets the state to do it for them... i can't ever recall seeing a forest service plow. However, I did park in the Skookumchuck trailhead ( also on rt3) last Sunday and it was cleared, so you may be ok. But if the pullout for the Garfield trailhead isn't plowed you can probably park a bit further(.25 miles) east at 5 corners -Truedeau rd. That's an access point to some of the sled trails in the area and usually has the shoulders well cleared. I almost always see vehicles & trailers parked there when i pass through.
