1/6/10 Skied N. VT BC. Cold but little wind with beautiful sunshine. Started in morning skiing a S - W aspect, surface starting to get a very thin sun crust. Nice snow otherwise. In afternoon, skied NE facing ridgeline, snow cold and dry. boot top to knee deep.

1/7/10 Checked out the c. Adks., still need some new snow, not much new since last week.

Another couple of days of skiing powder in N VT. A little crusty on some aspects on Saturday but still nice snow to be found. Snowing and filling in tracks on Sunday. Hope we get some substantial snow soon in the C. Adks but this will suffice for now. Probably be out in the Adks Th/Fr for a little solo tour and back to N VT for the weekend.

That looks awesome!
I was on the Tug yesterday for the first time in months. 5" of fluff on the decimated base.

Have fun!

2-18-10 Checked out a usual haunt in the Adks. Diminished base down low with a couple inches on top. Mid range woods skied well with deeper base and 4-6" on top. Up higher, variable from knee deep to windblown ice. Some nice lines but also lots of ice flows. Really need a good storm, otherwise bring on the corn.

2-19, 2/20/10 Went back to N VT for better snow. Friday was the better of the two days with about 6" falling during the day. Very windy but the snow skied really well. Saturday was good too but the fluffy had been beat down by the wind and by the end of the day a light freezing mist was falling.

2/27/10 Upside down snowpack out there in the Adks. Deep wet snow with a crust on top of the old cold, crusty base. Lots of whomping, shooting cracks and collapsing of the snowpack. Dug a pit on a representitive slope on a slide and got a moderate shear about 18" down on a 5' isolated column. Not worth the risk for crust on cement turns.

3/5-3/7 My favorite time of the ski season! Deep, stable and fast snowpack. Bushwhacks are as easy as they get and the steep lines are in.

Checked out this in the High Peaks Friday

Good windbuff and corn turns for a long ways

Not bad views

A little recovery kick and glide tour on a lake Saturday. Perfect, fast conditions on the lake surface.

Back to slide skiing Sunday. Bluebird and mashed potatos.

3/13/10 Horrendous conditions too windy and cloudy to soften up high, would have been perfect if the sun came out. Can't complain though another good day touring.

Stream crossings are beginning to collapse Very Happy

3-27-10 Followed the weather report south in search of corn, skied Plattekill for the first time and road the lifts for the first time in a couple of months. It is an amazing place. Nice and steep, no resort, just a base lodge and the hill tucked away in a high valley in the Catskills. There were maybe 50 people skiing Saturday. Slow to warm in the morning but there was 2" of new snow from Friday. Dust on crust tracks early and then it all warmed to beautiful corn for the afternoon.

The lowland approaches are getting a bit bare in the bc. Will be in the Peaks later this week.

Dan, Years ago my family had a ski cottage near Plattekill and I used to love that place. It would be closed all week and open fri-sun with what ever pow had collected during the week. It must have had the longest t-bar I had ever ridden. I'm glad to hear the place still has the character.

Biff,

It is a really cool place that still has that family area feel of the past. No condos, no hotels, no restaurants and no shops. Just a lodge and a mountain. When pulling into the area there is a sign that says overnight camping only in lower lot, that says a lot about the area. Not many places still overtly sanction camping. Plus the summit is at 3500' so decent snow especially in this the year of the southern storm track.
