Cannon 2015-2016

Postby wallag » Mon Mar 07, 2016 9:39 am

A late start to the Cannon 2015-2016 conditions thread:
I skied there yesterday, March 6th. Groomed trails were in excellent condition from first tram until about 10:30 when big ice patches started to appear in the usual heavy traffic areas like the trail between the Peabody and summit quads and on Avalanche. Not just boilerplate, but actual translucent pond ice. The margins of the trails remained enjoyable through about 1pm. By late afternoon the best skiing was on Vistaway, which had a sporting mixture of nice bumps and ice. Took one run over the Saddle to Mittersill---not really worth the hike in those conditions. Also did two laps of Lost Boys glade. Conditions in the woods were softer than the trails, but very thin cover.

2016-2017 season is starting off really well at Cannon. Was there yesterday. They were blowing snow everywhere on the front five and on a lot of the other connector trails as well. They had 35 trails open and with all the snow making going on and the new natural snow today should add several more trails this week. Great conditions for this time of year...the earliest start to a ski season for me in a long time. Vista View (all natural snow) was open and skied nice, my favorite trail of the day.

I was there on Saturday, Dec 10. I was really impressed. Vista Way was indeed fantastic. A great way to start the season.

They started blowing on Baron's and Taft Training slope today. I imagine the Mittersill chair could be spinning by the weekend. Even the snowmakers are amazed at how much snow they're making with the new system. Conditions are truly midwinter- its amazing compared to last year!

Thursday, Dec 15, 2016:
Several inches of fresh snow overnight made for fantastic conditions to start the day. The wind picked up around 11 and started scouring the wider trails, although some (Hardscrabble, Upper Cannon, Vista Way) stayed great all day. The upper mountain glades are open and have a surprising amount of snow for this early in the year. I still hit a few stumps but nothing too bad.

It wasn't quite below zero this morning so I went up to check out conditions. The NCAA championships were contested there and Jackson XC last week and boy did the snow makers put the new system to the test. I don't think Cannon has ever blown snow in March before, they'd blow through the budget by early February and shut it down. The mountain was blanketed, almost like the big thaw never happened. Fingers crossed for Tuesday!

Cannon on 1-9-18--

100% open..first time I have been there when it was completely wide open. Front trails were in great shape with lots of snow...even untouched powder on the mogel sides of Zoomer, Avalanche, and Pauly's Folly..Hardscrabble from top to bottom was really nice with only minimal rock and ice. Mittersill also wide open. I think it is the best I have seen Cannon in early January in a long time.....too bad the dreaded R-word might make an appearance on friday
