2018 Mount Washington Memorial Day BBQ and Stackfest

Postby RobRox » Sat May 05, 2018 8:50 am

Even if the patch is small, the 2018 Mount Washington Memorial Day BBQ and Slackfest will be happening on the East Snowfields for all three Memorial Day w/e days, if the road is open*.

I'll put up the bamboo for the 2018 10th Mountain Memorial Day Slalom on all three(*) days....it's not a race, just a way to remember and be grateful for what the 10th did for the world and for us as skiers (and riders and also climbers).

Grills, coolers, lawn furniture, children and dogs will be present....bring your straw hats** :)

** Your favorite hat is also apropos

2018 Mountashington BBQ and Slackfest, a report:

Saturday was showery. The snowfields were wide and started a bit higher up than last year and went just as far down. Got the 10th Mountain Memorial Day Slalom set up, took only a couple of runs, grilled a hotdog and escaped to the valley to dry my gear.

Sunday was still misty and almost breezy, but offered almost three hours of sun midday. Estimates varied between 324 feet of vert to 410 feet of vert, but whichever, it was enough for very pleasant yoyos in the corn. Old friends, new friends and assorted canines populated the Northeast Snowfield. Managed five runs, the beer and the veggie franks made for a pleasant lunch.

Monday, Rider.Steve drove up into a dense cloud. We schlepped our gear down to the snow (it was an epic journey of 150 meters walking from rock to rock in the Alpine Zone). Our view of the summit cloud indicated that bit of patience, while waiting for the sun to work on it, would reward us with both perfect conditions and excellent weather. Quite naturally, our patience took the form of drams of 12y/o Irish malt and fine cigars.

As the cloud dissipated, the slackers arrived in droves. Families with 10 kids between them, solos, couples and bro-groups. During my first run I saw the slalom course was affected by overnight melting. A bit of relocation put the final 6 gates well away from the rock sharks.

The kids were all racers and enjoyed making the groove on course. It was a pleasant spectacle. Their help in collecting the slalom poles was magnificent, a fine ending to a great ski season.
