Training Camp begins @4PM June 23rd

Postby RobRox » Tue Jun 06, 2017 1:12 pm

I have been "right sized". Last day on the job is June 23, followed by a number of severance weeks.

Road bike was recently tuned up, time to overhaul the MTB.....

It was unexpected, but it was not entirely unwelcome.

I think I have arrived at 80%, but tomorrow's long apointment with the financial guy will tell us if I am to be free or have to return to the salt mines.

Maybe this will turn out to be like rock climbing where the best way to make progress is a lateral move.

My jersey pocket began chirriping and sequences of phone tones began at the summit of Mt Wachusett as I finished my third lap. The phone reprogrammed itself and screwed my micro SD card. I shut it off and kept on riding. Cateye Stealth Wireless saves the day.

Four typical Wachusett Loops (details below). Had to park at the Echo Lake trailhead. First lap easy, second lap hot and the rest were survival laps.
Stats:
49.28 miles
Route vert gain per lap 1447' x 4 = 5788'
Avg speed 11.0 mph
Peak Speed 42.4 mph (on Bolton Road)
ET 4:26:29

Route details:
Echo Lake Road parking on Mountain Road in Princeton
South on Mountain Road
Hard right onto Westminster Road..watch it at the 90 degree left, hiker parking..dogs tend to be loose here.
Right at the fork to stay on Westminster Road
Encounter 1.2 miles of good dirt road at the Princeton/Westminster Town Line where the road becomes W Princeton Rd
Return to pavement where Lanes Road joins W Princeton Rd
Continue on W Princeton Rd to Bolton Road
Turn right on Bolton Road. (caution, very fast descents)
Stay on Bolton Road to turn right on Park Road
Stay on Park Road which becomes Mountain Road at the Westminster/Princeton Town Line
At 1.2 miles from Bolton Road, enter the Wachusett Reservation on North Road and climb to the top.
Descend back to Mountain Road and turn right.
Continue on Mountain Road back to start at Echo Lake Road parking.

That's a great workout, Rob. What's the grade like?

Grade..well there is some variation. It climbs 1,109 feet in 3.7 miles from the intersection of Bolton Road to the summit. That works out to 5.67% for the main ascent. According to my topo of the route there are sections of Mountain Road at above 10% and up to 14%. Then once on the reservation roads the grade is less consistent. However there is a section at 18% about 200' vert below the summit. Then there is the summit kicker, only 12% but it's a hammer blow to sore legs after 4 laps

Been roading it lately but went for a nice MTB ride today. Covered 17.71mi in 2:41:39 for 6.6 mph and vertical gain of 942 ft

Looks tame but the route is loaded with nasty surfaces and extended tech sections.

No ride yesterday, STUMP WARFARE instead. Lit cigar and got busy. Snapped a shot of the first progress...the section in between chooped/levered out:
Image
No ride because T-Storms were expected. Snapped this after stump pieces were removed,, holes filed, tools cleaned and axe head stoned to cigar trimming sharpness:

Minutes later it bucketed rain.
Today was a 75 miler, road ride to Harvard, Mass. That's only 3666' gain and a miserable 13.0 MPH...It is however the first time I have passed my age in miles this season
Pleasant rehydration:

Today's ride was to Mt. Wachusett and back. Not quite twice my age in miles, but over a vertical mile of climbing over the 120 miles ain't too shaby for an old fart. Managed a 13.9 mph average speed.

Thanks Williamtele!
Nice afternoon ride today, after yesterday's win at Stump Warfare, completed before the Fells zealots showed up. Minor creativty arrived at an 18.47 miler (02:21:06) with 1051 feet of gain. Nabbed a climb I was last able to do in 1988. A little later on I broke a spoke powering out of a rock/root angle....power is good, finesse would be better.
